ABSTRACT
In this talk, Dr. Bose will discuss how mathematics is used to understand how neurons in the brain and nervous system coordinate their activity to produce coherent behavior. The ability to make new memories or recall old ones, or the ability to determine the location of a sound source, or the ability to discern particular orientations or color contrasts are all examples of behavior that is encoded in the electrical activity of neurons. This activity can be described using basic equations from physics and circuit theory. He will give several examples where mathematical models have been useful in making predictions about the behavior of various neuronal networks. This talk should be of particular interest to students who want to know more about Applied Mathematics.
